It was a fun-filled week for students at The Calais School who feasted on green eggs and ham, enjoyed special dress-up days and listened to volunteers read to them as part of the school’s Read Across America Week celebration.
On Monday, students sported their favorite crazy socks and volunteers from Provident Bank visited K-7 classrooms to read Dr. Seuss as well as other books to classes. Dogs in the school’s Animal Assisted Intervention program (AAI) also donned their favorite socks to the delight of everyone. Volunteers from the bank make their readings at the school an annual special tradition for Read Across American Week. They read books and then talk to students about what they read. Students also enjoyed other special Dr. Seuss-themed or reading activities.
Tuesday was Cat in the Hat day so students sported their favorite stripes and read and white. Assistant Principal John Cohrs was spotted wearing his Cat in the Hat chapeau visiting classrooms throughout the week.
On Wednesday, students in the culinary program prepared and served up green eggs and ham for a special breakfasts for students. Students also sported their favorite pajamas.
The week of activities culminated on Thursday with “I Can Read With My Eyes Closed & Crazy Hat Day” as students and even dogs in the AAI program sported their favorite hats. All students in grades K-7 watched the Dr. Seuss film “The Lorax” following lunch.
