Did you know that young adults with disabilities (ages 18–30) can receive support and services needed to find meaningful work, build social connections, and lead more independent, fulfilling lives through the Calais Adult Transition Program?

This is just the beginning of a bright future for one Calais Alum. Alyssa Mastrandrea’s Calais story shows how dedication and the right support are the key to success.

Meet Alyssa Mastrandrea, a determined and compassionate young adult whose journey through The Calais School, the 12 Plus Program, and now the Calais Adult Transition Program showcases the power of perseverance, support, and personal growth. From learning how to take a LYFT independently to managing her own schedule and saving money for the future, Alyssa’s progress is a shining example of what’s possible with the right resources and support.

Alyssa is currently enrolled in the Calais Adult Transition Program, and she’s thriving. She’s working toward her Child Development Associate (CDA) certification while gaining hands-on experience at Sunnyfields Learning Center, a local preschool daycareAt Sunnyfields, Alyssa works flexible hours — sometimes 3 to 5 days a week — and even stays late when needed. Her dedication and willingness to step up demonstrates her growing confidence and independence. Alyssa enjoys the energy and curiosity of the children she works with.“The kids are fun. I like how they’re learning stuff. They’re learning social skills and getting ready for school.”

Of course, working with young children comes with challenges too. “They don’t always listen.” Alyssa admits.  But she has learned how to adapt and manage stress, thanks in part to the coping strategies she developed at Calais. She credits The Calais School with preparing her for the real world — not just academically, but emotionally and socially. “They helped me work on my coping skills at work.”

With support from mentors like Dr. Baker and Ms. Ervey, Alyssa has learned the importance of asking for help when needed, especially from coworkers who understand the day-to-day challenges. Alyssa speaks highly of the Calais Adult Transition Program and her one-on-one work with Ms. Ervey. Compared to 12 Plus, Alyssa appreciates the individualized attention and real-world focus the program provides. She is on track to complete her CDA certification by next June.

As for advice to other students, she encourages others to be open to support, take charge of their own goals, and focus on building the skills they’ll need in the adult world.

One of Alyssa’s biggest sources of pride? Growing independence by quickly learning how to use ride-sharing services. “I go back and forth to work, hang out with my friends—pretty much everywhere,” she says proudly. “Independence feels so great!”

Alyssa is a testament to how dedication, support, and a strong transition program can empower students to succeed. With clear goals, a growing skill set, and a commitment to building her future, Alyssa’s path continues to inspire those who know her — and those who are just beginning their own journeys.

We’re proud to call Alyssa a Calais alum, and we can’t wait to see what she does next!
