Welcome to a New School Year
As we approach the new school year, I would like to update you on new and exciting happenings at The Calais School. Building on last year’s theme to LEARN, GROW, and IMPROVE, we are MOVING FORWARD with new program developments.
Animal-assisted dog therapy has already been integrated during the Calais School day thanks to the dedicated volunteers from St. Hubert’s Animal Shelter and Creature Comforts Pet Therapy. Last year we added new curriculum using animal-assisted therapy during speech and reading classes. Due to the students’ positive response, The Calais School is pleased to announce the addition of a new member to the team….our very own service dog, Cali, trained specifically for the needs of our students by Janice Wolfe, owner of Merlin’s Kids. Cali will be available throughout each day under the supervision of a trained dog handler and will be integrated as needed and directed by the counseling team.
Due to the ever changing and expanding area of technology, The Calais School has added the use of iPad technology in grades K-8. Teachers were provided with the new iPads in June and have been training during the summer months. The use of large flat screen TVs will also provide an interactive tool for teaching lessons. The teachers have embraced the exciting new technology and are looking forward to providing innovative lessons.
Career and Technical Education classes have been extremely successful during the 2012-2013 school year and during the summer ESY program. ESY high school students have furthered their exploration of different careers, learned important life skills in the transition classes, and prepared for college placement tests. These classes are also available during the school year.
Thank you for your support and enjoy the final days of summer!
Sincerely,
Dr. Diane Manno
Principal
