Calais is proud to announce it has received a $15,000 grant from Santander Bank. The funding will directly support our 12 Plus Program, which plays a vital role in preparing young adults to lead independent, socially connected, and fulfilling lives.
The 12 plus Program focuses on three critical areas: work-based learning, college readiness, and independent living. The Santander grant will specifically enhance the program’s work-based learning internships and travel training components, which empower students through real-world experiences and essential life skills.
“Our 12+ Program is designed to help students build confidence, independence, and employability,” said John Cohrs, Executive Director of The Calais School. “Thanks to Santander Bank’s ongoing support, we can provide more opportunities for students to participate in supervised internships, learn workplace expectations, and navigate the community safely.”
Students also benefit from the program’s travel training sessions, which include classroom instruction on using rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft, identifying safe travel practices, and learning how to ask for help or verify their ride. These skills are critical in fostering autonomy and safety as students move toward greater independence.
We are also developing a Life and Career Center on campus to further expand our offerings and reach more students in need of transition support services.
Santander Bank’s support represents a significant step toward building inclusive pathways for young adults with special needs. We are grateful for this investment in the futures of our students.
