This year The Calais School basketball team had many outstanding accomplishments, but they triumphed today during their championship against The Craig School! All students and staff supported the Cougars and welcomed our opposing team’s cheering section.
An energetic season led up to today’s game. The Cougars started the season with a loss against ECLC but were able to bounce right back after that. In their first round match up against Banyan, the Calais Cougars won 45-13! Oscar scored 10 points in the game and played his best game of the season. Adam continued to lead our team in scoring as our captain and point guard with 12 points. Jill and Justin W. played amazing hard defense also chipped in with four points.
Team manager Anthony O. shared,
The Calais School ended the regular season with an 8-2 record, including a 5-0 record on our home court. We headed into the playoffs as the #1 seed and knew that the championship game would have to come through our home court. The championship stage was set and The Craig School was set to come to our home court after beating ECLC on a late three-pointer to seal their ticket to the championship.
Today’s championship game featured our spirit squad and dance team. The entire school population was in attendance to support us on our mission to bring a championship to Calais.
The Cougars came out strong with tough defense to create turnovers and take an early lead 8-2 in the first quarter. The intensity level was as high as it has been all year as both teams were putting forth valiant efforts.
After a very physical and challenging game The Calais School won the championship game with a final score 28-22. Strong defense, excellent teamwork, and the desire to never give up was the reason they were able to bring the championship to Calais.
Andrew scored 18 points, and Adam scored 8 points while controlling the tempo of the offense as our point guard. Senior Justin S. was motivated and ready to succeed in his last game in a Calais uniform and played excellent, scoring 2 points.
Coach Femia shared,
As we wrap up a successful basketball season we must reflect on the inspiration that this team has provided for our students and staff. We know that winning is not everything. This season was the most successful season in Calais history with or without the championship win. Thank you all to our players and fans for creating such a positive energy this season. Our team and managers are to be commended for their hard work and dedication to the team.
We are so proud of our Calais Cougars! Congratulations on a great season!
