Calais School 2021 graduates and students in grades 9-11 enjoyed a special Promaque to celebrate the end of the school year on June 4.

Students graduating in eighth and twelfth grades dressed in Hawaiian shirts and enjoyed a delicious barbecue of chicken, burgers, hotdogs, corn on the cob and a variety of salads. They danced, took photos, guessed which student belonged to which baby photo on display, autographed each other’s stuffed dogs and decorated their graduation caps. A fun time was had by all.

Some virtual students even returned for the festivities. The event was a special barbecue in place of prom, noted Counselor Marjane Vitaletti. “The theme was a Hawaiian Luau, and it was done COVID-style,” she said.

“This was the first time that all of the students were together in one and a half years due to COVID restrictions,” Mrs. Vitaletti said. “Some of the students, who remained virtual, also joined us. It was a beautiful sight to see them back together again.”

The students were under the big tent, decorated with flamingos and grass skirts with tiki torches as centerpieces on the tables as part of the tropical paradise theme.

“I am so happy,” said 2021 Calais graduate Rory S. “This luau is so much fun. It is a good way to get together and see everyone. Even my virtual friends are back.”

Eighth grade graduate Marissa said she enjoyed the luau and barbecue. “I got to decorate my graduation hat!” she said.

The barbecue was prepared by the American Barbecue Company.
