Michelle Primiano, Guidance Counselor at The Calais School, plays a vital role in supporting students through counseling, guidance, and advocacy—laying the groundwork for their academic, social, and emotional success both in school and beyond.
The role of a guidance counselor requires flexibility and a diverse set of skills. Ms. Primiano describes her position as “dynamic, ever-changing and engaging. No two days are ever the same. Depending on the day, I might be working one-on-one with students, attending IEP meetings, collaborating with teachers, or addressing school-wide initiatives with the administration.”
When asked what she values most about her role, Ms. Primiano shares, “I enjoy building meaningful connections with students and creating a safe and supportive environment in my office. I help ensure their schedules align with their goals, track their progress toward graduation requirements, and support them in reaching their highest potential beyond Calais.”
Calais student Preston S. expresses his gratitude, “If it weren’t for Ms. Primiano, I wouldn’t be in some of the classes I wanted. She’s helped me expand my knowledge.” Darion V. adds, “I’m thankful for her support with my online coursework.”
“The connections I build, the lives I help shape, and the positive impact of working with such wonderful people makes this role not just a job, but a fulfilling and enriching experience.” she explained.
Though much of her work happens behind the scenes, Ms. Primiano finds fulfillment in knowing that each detail, every effort, and every moment of support contributes to a greater purpose: the success of her students. “Every day, I’m lucky to work alongside dedicated educators, supportive counselors, and passionate professionals who all share the common goal of helping students succeed.” she shared.
