Join us for an evening of fun, food, and fundraising at The Calais Foundation’s 14th Annual Gala on April 23, 2026, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at The Hanover Manor in East Hanover. This signature fundraising event brings the community together for an unforgettable evening in support of children and young adults with serious learning disabilities and socialization challenges at The Calais School in Whippany, NJ. Now in its 14th year, the Gala also serves as a meaningful platform to honor individuals whose dedication and service have made a lasting impact on the disabilities community.
This year, the Foundation proudly recognizes two exceptional honorees:
Mike Smith, CPA, Partner at Nisivoccia LLP, will receive The McClafferty Award for his longstanding commitment to The Calais School. For 15 years at Nisivoccia LLP including 10 years as an independent auditor for The Calais School, Mike has helped ensure financial strength, transparency, and accountability — critical foundations that allow the school to remain focused on student success. His expertise and integrity have strengthened the school’s long-term stability and directly support its mission to help students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
Michelle Primiano, Guidance Counselor at The Calais School, will receive The Leitner Excellence in Education Award in recognition of her profound impact on students’ lives. Through counseling, guidance, and advocacy, Michelle creates a safe, supportive environment where students feel seen, heard, and empowered. By helping students align their goals, track progress toward graduation, and prepare for life beyond Calais, she exemplifies educational excellence and the transformative power of a dedicated educator.
As part of this year’s celebration, the Gala will honor the Salvaterra family, highlighting the vital role families play in student success. After an extensive search for the right educational fit for their son Niklas, the Salvaterras discovered Calais — a community where their son was understood, supported, and inspired to reach his full potential.
About the Gala
Gala ticket purchases directly support students at The Calais School, a private, state-approved special education school in Whippany. Proceeds from ticket sales and donations fund vital therapeutic and educational programs not fully covered by tuition alone — programs that are truly life-changing for Calais students and their families. To ensure this event remains accessible and welcoming to all, ticket prices have remained unchanged for the third consecutive year. More than a fundraiser, the Gala is an evening of connection, shared stories, and meaningful impact.
The evening will include a cocktail hour with hand-passed hors d’oeuvres, a tricky tray and silent auction, a seated dinner, and inspiring honoree presentations, with professional announcer and voiceover artist George Alan Ruth serving as emcee.
