Irish soda bread, bread pudding muffins, scones and donut holes are just some of the delectable creations baked by students in the Calais School’s 12+ program cooking club.
Calais Principal John Cohrs was so impressed with the success of the culinary program at the school’s Summer ESY Program that he asked Culinary Instructor Kelly Walsh to offer the virtual cooking club in the afternoon in the fall.
Mrs. Walsh said she meets with the students weekly on Thursdays to discuss a variety of different recipes and cooking methods and techniques and then many of the students bake them at home on their own or with the assistance of a parent. One week, a student told Mrs. Walsh and the club members about her grandmother’s recipe for a delectable chocolate cake. The student then asked her grandmother to share the recipe and everyone in the club tried out the recipe at home. The results were just scrumptious, according to the students and their families, who all get to enjoy the students’ creations.
Mrs. Walsh even created a video to share photos of some of the things the students made which included cowboy cookies and the famous chocolate cake. “It is fun to be with different kids and get to know their parents, who are helping,” she said. ”It’s a nice program to offer at The Calais School and I am glad to be a part of it.”
The cooking club was so well-received by students that it will be offered again beginning in December, she said. Check out our video of some of the cooking club’s delicious creations!
