Teaching may not have been his first calling, but in the classroom Mr. Kells is a natural.

Mr. Matthew Kells, Calais Media Arts & Technology Instructor, has perhaps one of the most unique employment backgrounds- and that may be what sets him apart from most. Before coming to Calais, Mr. Kells was a documentary filmmaker—a ten-time Emmy Award-winning director, producer, and writer of television shows, series, and documentaries, including The Rachael Ray Show. After leaving the film industry, he began his second career as a teacher when he joined the Calais School.

Mr. Kells runs his classroom with the perfect blend of humor, wit and patience. Through his unique skill set and extensive experience in the film industry, he gives students a platform to speak and be heard in a safe, non-judgmental environment. His ability to deeply connect with his students is another strong suit. As one of his students describes:

“He is always super kind but has that sarcasm that we as teenagers need in our lives. He knows how to brighten our moods if we are down too, which brings out the best in us.” ~ Carter M.

Mr. Kells is also the Director of Cougars on the Clock (COTC), a weekly student-run newscast produced and created by students. Through his guidance, COTC has reached a new level of professionalism, creativity, and authenticity.

“Not only has he revolutionized COTC, he exhibits the right amount of patience and push with the kiddos to get the best out of them,” recounts his colleague Shetora Antoine.

In a word, Mr. Kells describes his experience at Calais as transformative. “I am literally being transformed from a television producer into a teacher. More importantly, though, through the lens of Calais, my world is transformed. I can see all of the new blessings the students have provided me, and I am so much more thankful for the blessings that have been in my life for a very long time.”

We too are thankful for Mr. Kells and the inspiration and light he brings to Calais students every day — in the spotlight and behind the scenes.
