On the evening of May 1, 2025, the Calais community gathered at The Hanover Manor in East Hanover to celebrate our 13th Annual Calais Foundation Gala. Our event raised over $67,000 to fund leading-edge programs and resources for children and young adults with disabilities who attend The Calais School.
The event included a cocktail reception, silent auction and tricky tray followed by an awards ceremony and sit down dinner. We honored Mary Bawarski, CPA and Partner at School Accounting Professionals, with The McClafferty Award for her work in providing auditing, consulting, and financial services to over 55 private special education schools, including The Calais School. Cheryl Porter-Avino, Director of Admissions at The Calais School, was presented with the Leitner Excellence in Education Award for her unwavering advocacy and support in guiding families through the complexities of special education placement.
An especially moving highlight of the evening was a Calais School student profile of Jacob M. who participates in the 12 Plus program. He shared his personal experience in a Work Based Learning internship – crediting his time at the Calais School for providing him with the skills and confidence needed to thrive in the food service industry and secure meaningful employment.
“Thanks to you, Calais students are seen, supported, and believed in.” expressed Calais School Executive Director John Cohrs in a heartfelt address to the Gala guests. “Together, we’re not just supporting education—we’re shaping futures.”
We gratefully acknowledge all those who made the event a great success from the volunteers to the Calais School families, homerooms, and over 50 local New Jersey businesses and organizations who donated in-kind gifts and services.
