Work Based Learning goes high-tech this year. Calais students participating in internships through the Work Based Learning (WBL) program get the chance to explore career paths through on-site, hands-on internships at several local businesses.
Starting in September 2023, students began interning at Best Buy in East Hanover. Best Buy is a multinational consumer electronics retailer selling a wide range of electronics, computers, appliances, cell phones, video games and more. There are over 1000 locations within the United States alone.
This is a natural fit for Gen Zs, born into a world of high-speed internet, mobile devices and AI. Calais interns enjoy coming to Best Buy multiple times a week where they are exposed to the high-tech retail industry and learn job-specific skills such as how to set up product displays and work with pricing and product mapping systems. They also takeaway broader transferable skills like teamwork, problem solving, and communication.
Best Buy’s Manager Cory Metrokotsas considers the partnership with Calais to be a win-win. “I hope students learn job-based skills that help them make decisions on things they would like to do in the future. I am always very thankful for the work and learning the students do when they are here. My team, too, is learning as they work alongside Calais Students.”
Metrokotsas describes one unusual job perk at Best Buy, “Working at Best Buy is a lot different from other retailers. We get to play and work with tech all day. I hope students have a bit of fun while they are here.“
“We are proud of our student interns as they work and progress through this program.”, states Calais WBL Coordinator Maryann Braen. “Since its inception, the WBL program has been very positive and transformational for students. They learn about themselves and get the chance to explore career options after graduation.”
The Calais School’s Work Based Learning program gives students experience in a variety of industries so they can build resumes, learn skills, explore career paths and develop career specific field experience. Each year, our program grows with new local partnerships. Code Ninjas, Five Below, Johnny’s Pizzeria are some of our most recent partners. Check back for our next installment in this series featuring another exciting new partnership!
