As part of Calais’ Work Based Learning program, high school and 12 plus students get the chance to explore possible career paths through on-site, hands-on internships at several local businesses.
During internships, students gain hands-on training in real work environments as well as a chance to develop transferable skills important for success as they transition to adulthood. In addition, Work Based Learning internships help students build their resumes, explore career paths, and develop workplace readiness skills.
Our WBL Spotlight series continues with a glimpse into our recent partnership with Ricciardi Brothers. Ricciardi Brothers, is a family owned retail establishment providing paint, staining, and decorating needs to its customers throughout New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Founded in 1929 by the late Joseph Ricciardi, it has now grown to 45 locations. In January, two Calais students began their internships at the Morristown location under the supervision of Victor Zywicki.
The students participated in a variety of activities such as breaking down equipment, managing inventory and stocking supplies, and learning about the paint-mixing process all while getting an inside look at the retail paint/decorating industry. They commented on how welcomed and appreciated the employees and customers made them feel. Working at Ricciardi Brothers has given our student interns the opportunity to master a diverse range of valuable and transferable skills in customer service, communication, time & inventory management, problem solving, numeracy and attention to detail.
“The whole experience working with the Calais students has been positive“, comments Zywicki, “Calais students really learned their jobs well and they were always so polite and pleasant to work with. We look forward to working again with Calais in the next school year.”
