Many people don’t know that Calais’ Asst. Principal Mr. Sokolewicz’s has some major cooking skills.
He’s actually a graduate of The College of Culinary Arts at Johnson and Wales University. Under his guidance, Calais’ Culinary Program has really evolved. Each week the students prepare a meal for the entire school. Faculty and staff have been lining up to try everything from lasagna to soups. This year we’ve also welcomed dietician, Mrs. Walsh, to the program.
Mrs. Walsh ensures that students learn how to mix and match foods to make a balanced meal while Mr. S’s hands on approach to cooking keeps the students involved from prep to cooking and clean-up. Together this all-star team has reinvigorated Calais’ Culinary Arts program and dished out a lot of delicious and healthy meals to students and staff.
In the first week of class alone students made sweet potato gnocci, pasta sauce over spiraled zucchini noodles and turkey meatballs, roasted veggies and fruit smoothies. When asked about the program Mr. Sokolewicz explained “Students come to class excited to try new foods, explore different cooking techniques , and learn about preparing healthy meals for themselves.”
Students are definitely well fed but they are also learning about kitchen safety and best practices for hygiene as well as food safety.
