Ms. Shah’s Science Classes have been hard at work designing their own basketball courts. Students were given materials that included: dixie cups, paper, card board, glue, paint, tape, plastic spoons, and rubber bands to design, decorate, and create one-of-a-kind basketball courts.
The students had the choice to work with partners or independently in order the complete the project. After brainstorming ideas and doing some scientific research on the internet, the class discussed their final design with their partners and the teacher. Once the idea got finalized they started building the project. Some students incorporated elements from past S.T.E.M. projects to execute their designs. The concept of kinetic and potential energy were drawn upon as some students built catapults to launch the balls into the basketball net like a catapult. Another student worked on creating a self propelled car to transport the ball. Students also added their own personal flare with hand drawn art, colorful paint and photo collages.
When the projects were complete Ms. Shah and her class invited faculty and staff to test out the functionality and efficacy of each student’s design. Everyone had a blast testing out the accuracy of the catapults and their own aim.
