For student Katie G., the Calais School 12+ Program has truly made a difference in her life.

“The 12+ Program at the Calais School is an excellent option for any young adult, who feels they would benefit from a gradual step after high school graduation…,” she said. The 12+ Structuring Learning Experience (working at an internship) has been a wonderful part of Calais. I have very much strengthened my customer service skills and my emotional stamina by working at a flagship ShopRite supermarket and at Petco. Those of us who display proficiency in communication, problem solving, preparedness, and performance at work look forward to being rewarded with monetary stipends based on an evaluation system. Outside of the workplace, we have greatly enjoyed socialization and life skills opportunities while attending Community Based Instruction (CBI) trips.”

In addition, the Calais 12+ Program has helped students gain confidence, learn important independent skills including cooking and personal care and offer them knowledge of community resources, such as how to find a doctor and how to rent or buy a home. The program’s relationship with the County College of Morris allows students the change to take courses at the college. Katie  said she has also improved her physical fitness with regular trips to the YMCA.

“The Calais 12 Plus staff cares greatly about its students and is always willing to help, whether it be a little extra counseling, help with some conflict resolution, or assistance with an internship. I was originally planning to stay at Calais for only one extra year, but Calais has been so good for me and so flexible in its approach that I am still here for a second year of 12+. I encourage you — whether you are a parent, a student about to graduate high school, or a district employee — to consider the 12+ Program because of the wonderful opportunities that it offers in a safe and welcoming environment while supporting students in their efforts to gradually become comfortable and confident in the world around them.”
