The Calais Student Spotlight is a place where we celebrate the many achievements of our talented students. Today we are proud to share news of 12 Plus student Chelsea C.’s recent selection to the County College of Morris Chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) (Sigma Alpha Phi), an honor society that helps college students achieve their goals and better their lives and, in the process, build leaders who make a better world.
“When I first received the email that I was formally accepted into the program, I was utterly shocked because it was just something out of the blue,” Chelsea said.
Chelsea was accepted into the program because of her college grade point average. “I feel honored to be one of the NSLS members at the County College of Morris,” she said. “If another student like me was to get accepted into this enticing program, I would highly recommend them to join because it can lead you to more scholarships, career opportunities, and travel experiences!”
Calais Principal John Cohrs congratulated Chelsea on her academic achievement. “It comes as no surprise to us that Chelsea has been nominated for this honor,” he said. “Her leadership is evident every day at Calais. She is an exemplary role model for her peers.”
Twelve Plus Program Coordinator Lisa Vallo also praised Chelsea on her accomplishment. “Chelsea embodies the Calais philosophy of recent accomplishments both here at Calais and at County College of Morris,” Mrs. Vallo said. “Her impressive growth and development shine through her dedication and hard work. It is so rewarding to see her recognized for these admirable attributes. Well done, Chelsea!.”
The Calais School 12 Plus Program was created for students ages 18 – 21. The program is designed to offer students the skills they need to move successfully from school into the adult world. Tailored to a student’s individual goals and strengths, the program provides options, plans and preparation. Key program components include community-based instruction, independent living, experiential work readiness learning, social-emotional development, post-secondary options and college preparedness. A partnership with The County College of Morris, known as the CCM Bridge Program, provides students the opportunity to get a feel for college life and sample college level classes with support.
