Students in the Calais School’s culinary program are learning how to make pizza in a fun-filled class activity.

Culinary teacher Kevin Tulloch said the students enjoyed making pizzas in class last week. The class was broken into small groups and each group was supplied with fresh dough. The groups had fun working together to knead and roll out the dough. The students learned a specific technique using their fists and fingers to prepare the dough.

Mr. Tulloch said he instructed the students to follow several steps to make their pizzas. “I asked the students to coat the dough in flour, which makes it easier to handle while kneading,” he said. “They then rolled out the dough using a rolling pin to make the dough flat and bubble-free.”

Once the dough was flat, Mr. Tullock showed the students a trick by brushing olive oil  on the dough to give it more flavor and add a nice brown color as it cooked.  “Then the students use a fork and poke holes throughout the dough to keep it from bubbling.”

The dough was blind baked for five minutes. Students then used a spoon to spread sauce on the pizza and then topped it with cheese and other toppings including pineapple and pepperoni..

Mr. Tulloch baked the pizzas in the oven for an additional five to six minutes and then the students got to slice them and taste them. The results were delicious!
