One of the ultimate measures of a school’s success is seeing its graduates thrive. At The Calais School, we love hearing from our alumni and celebrating their journeys. Recently, our Guidance Counselor checked in with Paul B., Class of 2025, and we just had to share what she learned…

After graduating from Calais last spring, Paul completed his first year at Montclair State University, School of Business, earning a place on the Dean’s List both semesters, including a spring semester with straight A’s.

His mom, Helen, couldn’t be prouder.

“We could not have envisioned a better year for him. He’s thriving. He loves all of his accounting courses, and I’m starting to wonder if Paul is going to end up an academic!”

Just as importantly, Paul embraced college life with confidence. Living on campus gave him the independence he was looking for while allowing him to stay close to friends and enjoy everything college life has to offer. His first year was filled with new experiences, academic success, and personal growth.

This summer, Paul is giving back to the very program that helped launch his college journey. He was invited to return to Montclair’s Summer Bridge Program—this time as a Teaching Assistant and Supplemental Instructor for incoming students. It’s a full-circle moment that reflects not only his academic success, but also the leadership qualities he has developed.

Paul believes his eight years at Calais played a pivotal role in preparing him for college and beyond. Looking back, he now recognizes the value of the individualized support, strong academics, and opportunities he received throughout his time at Calais.

Paul’s story shows what’s possible when students are supported, challenged, and encouraged to believe in themselves. Through individualized academics, therapeutic support, and transition planning, The Calais School empowers students with learning differences to build confidence, discover their strengths, and prepare for meaningful, independent lives.

We couldn’t be more impressed with all that Paul has accomplished, and we can’t wait to see what comes next. Whether he’s excelling in accounting, mentoring future college students, or pursuing new opportunities, one thing is certain—his future is full of promise.

Congratulations, Paul! Your entire Calais family is cheering you on every step of the way.
