As part of The Calais School’s token economy behavior system, students have the option of purchasing items at the school store with points they have earned throughout the year. The school store sells school supplies, sports cards, calculators, games, Calais School clothing and many other items. Students may choose to spend or save the points they earned to purchase items that may be of interest to them.

This year there have been a number of hot items in the school store. Anything Angry Birds, Star Wars, or Doc McStuffins sells out fast. Headphones and iTunes gift cards are very popular with high school students.

The Calais School’s point system teaches and reinforces new behaviors. Students earn points in all classes by successfully accomplishing or performing a target behavior during the class period. Target areas are chosen from five behavioral areas defined through a collaborative effort by the staff working with the student. The targeted goals are reviewed on a regular basis and modified when appropriate. For example, a target behavior may be “Working consistently throughout the period.” The student earns a point for accomplishing that task. Points are awarded for each target area successfully performed each period throughout the school day. This system allows each student to always know the areas that are being met with success and those that will require greater effort on their part to change.
