Declared by the United Nations in 2007, World Autism Awareness Day encourages UN Member States to raise awareness about autism. Schools and colleges around the country are wearing blue today and throughout the month of April to encourage early diagnosis and early intervention.

The NJ Star Ledger reported this weekend that one in 68 American children are now diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Boys are nearly five times more likely than girls to have autism and statistics in the state of New Jersey are markedly higher than the national average: one in 45 children, with the rate among boys one in 28.

All this month,  organizations including The Calais School will help raise awareness about autism spectrum disorders.  Check back to see what we’re doing for autism awareness month!
