Several Calais School students in the Calais 12 Plus Program are learning all about food safety and preparing for careers in the food industry as part of the ServSafe Food Handler Certification.

The students study basic food safety, personal hygiene, cross contamination/allergens, time temperature control and cleaning and sanitation and then take an exam with 50 multiple choice questions. Several students studied for and passed the exam in December, receiving a special certificate.

“Serve Safe is a food and beverage safety training and certificate program administered by the U.S National Restaurant Association,” said Lisa Vallo, the structured learning experience coordinator who oversees the 12 Plus Program. “A passing grade on the test means you have sufficient knowledge about food safety. This certificate, which is good for three years, is for individuals looking to work in food service-related job.”

It certifies that they have basic food safety knowledge and is required for people who work in food handler employee-level positions. The online program includes employee knowledge, responsibilities and training when preparing handling and serving food to the public.

There are many jobs available in the food service industry, but this certification gives Calais students an edge over the competition. People with this certification are viewed as more qualified and better trained for positions in the food service industry. With their knowledge, they can also protect their families from food-borne illnesses.
