Once again this year, volunteers from Provident Bank in Morristown celebrated Read Across America with students at The Calais School, a private, non-profit school for children with special needs. Provident Bank’s volunteer day was part of our annual week-long celebration of reading at The Calais School. Each year, Lower School students celebrate reading with a series of special events, joining millions of their peers across the country to celebrate the National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America Day on Thursday, March 2nd.

Provident Bank volunteers brought a book to read to each elementary school class, including the Shel Silverstein classic, The Giving Tree. Ms. Perillo’s class enjoyed reading immigrant stories from Hope and Tears: Ellis Island Voices. We had a great time seeing some familiar faces and getting to know our newest volunteers from Provident.

Students and staff showed their school spirit throughout the week. they celebrated Monday’s Crazy Hat Day, Tuesday’s Mismatched Clothes Day, Wednesday’s Crazy Sock Day, Thursday’s stripes, red, and white for Cat in the Hat Day, and Friday’s Calais Spirit Day. Each day a special visitor read to Ms. Heinen and Mrs. Braen’s classes, including teachers and some of our high school students!

Read Across America is a program created by the National Education Association. NEA’s Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss.

We were thrilled that Provident wanted to share the day with us again and and are so thankful for their continued generosity. Thank you Provident Bank!
