On Tuesday March 25th The Calais School played The Montgomery Academy in a home basketball game. The entire school was in attendance and supportive of our basketball team. The teachers, administration, and students all cheered as loud as they could as they watched an amazing game. The Cougars jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, getting the win at 40-21 over The Montgomery Academy.
Team captain Omar led all scorers with 19 points, but also had a lot of assists and rebounds and organized our offense most of the game. Chester scored 11 points, including a three pointer early in the game that energized the crowd. Alex scored 4 points and was a vital part of organizing our team offensively and defensively. Justin W., Justin S., and Mike also electrified the crowd with their game play, scoring 2 points each.
Our basketball team is currently made up of eight 8th-12+ students who have shown a particular interest in the sport. Team captain Omar has done a tremendous job in the captain role and our team would not be where they are today without his leadership. We also have three managers on board who are assets to player and game management.
The Calais School band and cheerleading team are also a big part of our basketball team. We want to thank them for all their hard work at practice and at our game. Coached by Ms. Braen and Ms. Heinen, the cheerleaders cheered as loud as they could and it proved to be motivating for the team. Under the direction of Ms. Mutchler, the band performed The Star-Spangled Banner to kick off our game and kept the tunes coming.
Coach Femia had great things to say about the game and our team:
One of our goals as a team was to make sure that everyone got the opportunity to score a basket, and we exceeded that goal as every single player on our team scored. This speaks volumes about our teamwork and about this team’s willingness to share and grow as a team.
As a team, we have three goals. These goals are to show passion, patience, and assertiveness. In the practices leading up to our first home game we worked hard on conditioning and understanding our team’s chemistry. Our team loves the game of basketball and it is very fulfilling to see this as a coach. The progress amongst all of our players is unbelievable and we are truly amazed with how hard our team has worked.
Our basketball team wants to thank The Montgomery Academy for coming into our school and being such great competitors and demonstrating excellent sportsmanship. After the game, the team had a nice pizza lunch together and we reminisced on what a great day it had been. On Wednesday April 2nd our basketball team will be traveling to ECLC of Chatham for our first away game!
