Students in the Calais School’s Extended School Year program enjoyed a special presentation about health, fitness and nurtrition from b Fit on a recent morning.

The assembly gets students excited about eating healthy, fitness, nutrition and exercise. Calais ESY students enjoyed a 10-minute fun-filled exercise routine which got them all jumping around and moving in the school’s all-purpose room.

B Fit founder Brian Richards asks students to “pledge” to do 30-60  minutes of exercise each day to help them “b Fit” and asks them to promise to eat “5 a Day” or five servings of fruits and vegetables.

ESY student Elijah said he enjoyed the b Fit program as he played with some of the plastic fruit and vegetables after the presentation. Some of the students put apples and tomatoes on top of their heads and then took photos with plastic replicas of apples, tomatoes and bananas.

“I teach them how to exercise at home and to exercise in front of the television,” Richards said. “Doctors say we need an hour of exercise each day.”

For 20 years, the b Fit program has brought educational programs to schools across New Jersey, according to Richards. In addition, through his company Academic Entertainment, Richards brings a variety of educational programming to schools throughout New Jersey. These include programs in math, science, reading, art, dance, character education and social studies to name a few. The character education show teaches students respect and responsibility. Students at The Calais School ESY program enjoyed a recent program from Corey the Dribbler, a fun basketball stunt show,  which is affiliated with Academic Entertainment.

Special Education Teacher Maryann Braen said that she hopes to bring other academic programs to Calais students during the regular school year.
