As Jeremy Schlieper closes out his first year as The Calais School’s Physical Education Instructor, it’s clear that his upbeat attitude, creative lesson planning and encouraging teaching style have positively impacted students and co-workers alike.
Mr. Schlieper graduated from Montclair State University in 2023 with a degree in Health & Exercise Science and his teaching certificate. As a life-long athlete and Eagle Scout, he was drawn to Calais by the opportunity to help all students see the enjoyment of physical education and the benefits it offers to their physical and mental well-being.
“I love that I get to see every student in the building! Having PE and Health with both upper and lower school, as well as teaching health to the 12+ program, I gain the opportunity to get to know all students and build a positive student/teacher relationship with all. Also, with physical education, they know they can unwind a little bit and run around the gym to release all the pent up energy they have been carrying around to their classes.” shared Schlieper.
His approach starts with teaching fundamental PE skills and encouraging students to try their very best — all within the confines of a therapeutic environment where students feel safe and welcome. Beyond physical activity, he focuses on boosting students’ self esteem, fostering a sense of belonging and giving them a place to decompress.
“He gives me confidence and courage to keep going.” explained Calais student Darien C.
For Mr. Schlieper, teaching has proven to be a source of joy and purpose, “With this being my first year of teaching, I did not know what to expect, but every day brings something different and I have enjoyed every moment…whether it is coaching the basketball and track team, watching students start to excel in the sport they were once struggling with, getting to know all the amazing people that work here, or getting stung by a random bee in the gym in the middle of winter. Every day is a new adventure and I feel I have found a home here at Calais.”
Aside from coaching the Calais Cougar Basketball and Track teams, Mr. Schlieper also recently hosted his first ever Calais Field Day. To no one’s surprise, the event was a huge success with over a dozen stations – keeping students and staff smiling and active all day!
