The Calais School is mourning the loss of Daniel Karger, an avid supporter and long-time Calais Foundation volunteer, a man who would spend his free time attending school plays, concerts and graduations and meeting with staff, students and administrators simply because he cared.
Mr. Karger, a founding member of the Calais School’s Board of Trustees, dedicated his life to helping others.
“His passing has been a shock to the Calais community and will leave a void that is hard to fill,” said Calais Executive Director David Leitner. “Dan had a passion for helping people with learning disabilities.”
More than 20 years ago, Mr. Karger began serving on the Calais School Board of Trustees. He served as president and chairman of the program committee and a member of the personnel committee.
“Dan helped the school evolve into a world class special education school for students with complex and multiple learning disabilities and psychiatric disorders. With his leadership and support, the Calais School has developed a highly esteemed Animal Assisted interventions program,” Mr. Leitner said.
About 15 years ago, Mr. Karger helped Mr. Leitner, school attorney David Rostan and Charles and Beverly McClafferty establish the Calais Foundation to support the school as well as children with special needs.
He was a longtime volunteer with the Calais Foundation, helping with different events, including galas and golf outings. His dedication and support will be missed.
