Just in time for Presidents’ Day, Calais students in Mrs. Maryann Braen’s class wrote letters to President Joseph Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris asking them to help protect the world from global warming, put an end to discrimination in the United States and defeat the coronavirus.

Student Eli A. implored the president to “help things get better” in our country including putting an end to discrimination. “Many people are discriminated against for things they cannot control,” he said. “I hope you help put a stop to racism, police brutality, hate crimes, and hate overall. I understand that the environment is important, as well as other issues, but we cannot help one another if we can’t even bear to be around each other. We should stand united and equal.”

Simon J. congratulated President Biden on becoming the 46th president of the United States and then told him that he hopes “you can help us beat COVID-19 and we can go back to resuming our normal lives.”

Simon also mentioned Biden’s proposed Clean Energy plan and notes that it “may help in meeting the climate challenges we face, including more windmills and more solar panels.”

The environment is also a concert for student Elizabeth S., who raised concerns about global warming and asked the president “to protect the environment…and to definitely save those polar bears and other animals before they go instinct.”

Elizabeth also wished the new president the best of luck in his presidency. She said that he inspired her to create drawings supporting equal rights. “You and many other people have definitely inspired me to do these drawings,” she said.

Student Ben A. shared some of his personal interests with the president, telling him that he enjoys basketball and math, especially Algebra and hopes to study mathematics in college. In addition, Ben told the president “I’d like to see more programs in place that promote education while also making it affordable and accessible to all people.”

Ben also asked the president to consider “some help with the pandemic and health care.”

And Madison F. wrote a letter to Vice President Kamala Harris. “I want to give you my dearest congratulations on being the first female vice president of the United States of America… I am wishing you the best of luck for the next four years in office. You are going to do great things in the future.”

Madison asked the vice president to help with climate change and fighting the coronavirus.
