Some people are just a ray of sunshine—no matter what challenges they might encounter. At The Calais School, paraprofessional Robert Muccia is one of these people. He shows up each day with positivity, patience and a big smile of encouragement.
Paraprofessionals are a vital part of the Calais community. They work alongside teachers to reinforce instruction, support emotional and behavioral growth, and help keep students engaged and on track throughout the day. They are a steady, supportive presence that helps create the nurturing environment Calais is known for—and Rob embodies that role completely.
Working with 12 Plus students both on campus and at the Care One Work-Based Learning site, Rob leads with kindness and a belief in every students’ potential.
“I always try to model kind and caring behavior,” he shares. “I believe nothing is beyond what our students can achieve.” He regularly encourages students with a mantra that has guided him through life: “You can give in. You can give out. BUT you don’t give up.”
Rob notes that building connections— especially with new students— can be one of the most challenging parts of the job. But through patience, humor, and genuine care, he consistently finds ways to break down barriers and build trust.
When asked to describe his experience at Calais in one word, Rob says, “Rewarding.” He’s grateful for the warm welcome and ongoing support from both staff and students—and that appreciation goes both ways. As one coworker shared about Rob, “You are truly an asset to the 12+ program. We all adore you.”
Currently pursuing his New Jersey Teacher Certification, Rob hopes to one day become a Calais teacher or an AAI Handler. Until then, his impact is already clear—he’s helping students believe in themselves, one day at a time.
