Calais ESY students enjoyed cooking class each week throughout the summer. To celebrate the end of the summer and the last week of ESY, students made something fun and creative last week to celebrate.
Teacher Kelly Walsh said she cooked with her students “live” online three days per week, asking them to follow each step of the recipe. Last week, she asked her two groups of students, a high school group and a group of students in grades 4-8, to make homemade mozzarella sticks.
Ms. Walsh gave the students the recipe in Google classroom. Some of the students did not have all the ingredients for the recipe, Ms. Walsh said. “The students improvised by using ingredients they had in their kitchens. Everyone’s dish looked a little different but tasted delicious!”
To try at home:
Healthy Mozzarella Sticks
1 large egg
1 teaspoon of Italian seasoning
½ teaspoon of salt
1 cup of Panko breadcrumbs
Mozzarella cheese 8-10
Set up three bowls
Italian Seasoning
Eggs
Breadcrumbs
Coat the mozzarella sticks in seasoning, eggs and breadcrumbs and freeze them for half an hour.
Cook in the oven at 425 degrees for 10 minutes.
(Note: Ms. Walsh suggests using purchased cheese sticks. She also recommends freezing the mozzarella sticks for two hours before cooking so the coating sticks better and the cheese does not melt too quickly.)
