Something very special happens at the Calais School during the last 50 minutes of the day on Wednesdays. It’s at this time that students pack up their backpacks and head off to explore a passion or special interest at their chosen Calais Club ranging from Anime to Minecraft, Cooking to Cosmetology.

Clubs offer students a fun, less structured opportunity to come together to blow off steam while exploring interests and sparking creativity. This additional time each week allows students to participate in extracurricular activities during the school day. The various clubs not only give students the chance to have fun and meet new friends, it also affords them the natural opportunity to work on things like social skills building in a supportive environment.

Calais students love their clubs and they also appreciate that they can change their club election during the year as their interests change. Students have even used their self-advocacy skills in lobbying for clubs not currently offered. For example, the “Dungeons and Dragons Club” was started based on the request of a group of students who were interested in spending time together but didn’t feel the other clubs were a good fit for them.
