Calais School students in the upper school and 12+ programs are learning about leadership and collaboration.
The Calais School Class Representative program was created 10 years ago to give “every high school student the opportunity to be an important part of the student body,” said Calais Counselor Marjane Vitaletti, who organizes the program.
Students in grades 9-12+ in each homeroom vote to select two representatives to represent them, she said. “The duties of the representatives are to present ideas they have, as well as the ideas of other students in the homeroom, for school-wide activities,” Mrs. Vitaletti said. “As a group, we collaborate with a plan of action. Some of the activities include organizing dances, school-wide contests and activities.”
For the first month, the class representatives are planning Bullying Awareness Month and a virtual Halloween celebration. Mrs. Vitaletti also thanked the homeroom teachers for assisting with this process.
New class representative Carly S. said she was excited when she found out that she had been elected by her classmates. “Being elected class rep made me feel really special and it makes me feel like my friends trust me to be responsible and with making decisions for the school,” she said. “They also trust me to include everyone with decisions that we make. I like being in charge and coming up with ideas for the school’s special events with the other student reps such as the Halloween dance.”
The 2020-21 Calais School Class Representatives are:
9th grade: Johnny J and Jeremy W
10th grade: Lucas B and Carly S
11th grade: Samantha K and John James N
12th grade: Olivia O and Marissa B
12+: Anna C and Chase L
Congrats to all!!
