STEM Education: A Lesson in Hydrogen

Recently, TransOptions Environmental Education Manager, Kristen Tomasicchio visited Mr. Papadakis’s High School Technology class to teach his students about the use of hydrogen as an alternative transportation fuel. Ms. Tomasicchio provided the students with kits containing all the necessary components to construct their own H2 fuel cell cars.  Each student worked diligently to build their cars which are powered by fuel cells running on hydrogen produced through electrolysis.

The fun STEM activity gave students much more than a lesson on hydrogen and fuel cell technology, they were given the opportunity to experience a new way to explore and engage with the world.

The Hydrogen Car Challenge (H2 Challenge) is one of two hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programs offered by TransOptions that the Calais School participates in. The other highly regarded program, Junior Solar Sprints, will be offered to our middle school systems this year.

By introducing students to the various subject matter under the umbrellas of science, technology, engineering and math, the STEM curriculum at the Calais School helps students discover and hone the skills required to gather and digest information, problem solve and innovate.
