On Wednesday, June 8th, Calais students took part in a Field Day with several activities designed to build teamwork, sportsmanship, and other social skills in fun and creative ways.
Each homeroom class took part in eight different activities, including volleyball, frisbee bowling, a marble run, and more. One especially fun activity was the Buddy Walkers station, in which three students at a time straddled between two wooden platforms. Students practiced communication and focus as they worked to move the platforms across the field by stepping together with the same leg.
Throughout the event, students cheered each other on, took turns, and had conversations with peers. Meanwhile, students in Calais’ 12 Plus Program applied work readiness skills as they assisted at the stations by encouraging younger students, helping explain directions, and getting materials. It was a great opportunity for everyone, including the teachers, to get some fresh air and move around – a welcome change from working hard both in and out of the classroom.
After two hours of exercise and fun in the sun, everyone sat under the tent to listen to our guest speaker, Tommy Hilcken. Tommy delighted students and staff alike with his Magical Motivation. His energy, humor, and magic skills captivated students and inspired them to share their dreams and goals for the future.
This year’s Field Day was dedicated to former Calais principal Dr. Diane Manno, who retired this past year after over two decades with The Calais School. Throughout her time at Calais—and throughout her life — Dr. Manno has shown a strong passion for students with special needs and their families. We are grateful to Dr. Manno for her role in making Calais all that it is today, and we wish her all the best in her retirement.
