This year students enrolled in Calais’s 12 Plus Program have the opportunity to earn their ServSafe Food Handler Certification. Upon successful completion of the online course and 40-question exam, students receive a Certificate of Achievement from the National Restaurant Association.

The certificate is a hospitality industry recognized credential which verifies basic food safety knowledge for individuals in food handler employee-level positions. The online program includes employee knowledge, responsibilities and training when preparing, handling and serving food to the public. Student course work includes coverage in five main areas:

  1. Basic Food Safety
  2. Personal Hygiene
  3. Cross Contamination & Allergens
  4. Time & Temperature
  5. Cleaning & Sanitization

Why A ServSafe Handler Certification?

There are lots of job opportunities available in the foodservice industry but that also means the competition can be tough. Employers who are hiring staff see well-trained food handlers as more desirable and more valuable employees. Offering our 12 Plus students this unique opportunity to gain an industry recognized certification will help to get their foot in the door. The certification is also valid for three years.

The Food Handler Course also offers less obvious benefits. Through the certification process students gain important knowledge and skills relating to sanitization and hygiene that will not only protect the public but themselves and their families from illness when they are making meals in the home.

To date nine Calais 12+ students have successfully completed the ServSafe Food Handler on-line course and passed the final assessment. Congrats 12 Plus students!
