DSC_0265This year Calais School students participated in a school-wide science fair. Students loved working on their experiments and showing their hard work off to their peers! The past two days students have been sharing the experiments they have been working on for the past few weeks.

Older students were diligent about explaining their projects to their younger peers and everyone seemed to enjoy some of the more interactive projects students worked on.

Students in Mrs. Braen’s class have been learning about the butterfly life cycle. Claire put together a special project testing her hypothesis about the amount of carbon dioxide released when baking soda and vinegar are combined. Will it pop the balloon?

Mrs. Tacinelli’s class showed their fellow students different optical illusions and shared some fun facts about the human eye.

Students in Ms. Perillo’s class each presented their research on different ecosystems.

Students in Mrs. Davies’ class worked on different animation projects, optical illusions, and even a clock powered by fruit!

Can you read the color of the word instead of the word itself?

Some students studied the different types of crystal formations formed by sugar and epsom salt.

High school students worked on a variety of impressive science projects. A number of students tested hypotheses about generating electricity. Can you generate electricity from graphite, a hydrogen fuel cell, or fruit? Did you know the oils from fruit are flammable?

There were several food-themed projects as well. Ever wonder which gum to choose for long-lasting flavor? Wish your pancakes were fluffier? Students tested their hypotheses in the most delicious ways.

Anna’s project on static electricity showed us why sometimes our hair sticks up!

All of the 2016 Science Fair’s projects reflected our students’ hard work. Science teacher Ms. Scaglione worked hard organizing an excellent school event showcasing our students’ interests and dedication to the scientific process. A special thank you to Mrs. Vitaletti for helping the individual projects come together!

Thank you to all of the students and staff members who made our Science Fair proof that together, we succeed! Stay tuned for video of some of the experiments in action…
